Find out more on how we make money.

Rob and I are all about saving money…as long as we do not have to jump through hoops to do it.  We have been married for 26 years.  In that 26 years, we have completed zero rebate forms, clipped maybe a handful of coupons, and have never considered price matching when buying our groceries.  But we do love moneyback programs like eBates!

Looking back, I remember there was that one time, yes that one time, which I ended up with a raincheck.  I do not remember all the details about how that went down, I just know I never cashed in that raincheck.

Discount shopping

This above disclosure of our inability to discount shop highlights how stupid-dumb we were with money.  It is this stupid-dumb that got us in debt!

Although we suck at brick and mortar discount shopping…we have found several easy ways to find awesome discounts online!

Online shopping is one of those shop at my hours, no lines, no screaming kids in the next aisle over processes that is right up our alley.  (Ooh, did that make me sound like a hateful old cat lady?)

With that being said, finding a good deal and earning bonus cash back on the things we need is kind of exciting.

Yep, there’s my super nerdy side coming out!

With our online shopping experience, we have learned a few tips and tricks to finding the best deal online over the years.

One of our favorite ways to save money online is by taking advantage of Cash Back offers.  We use some sort of bonus Cash Back offer when we have to book a hotel room, purchase clothes, print photos, rent a car, or even buy toilet paper.  You get the picture.  We use cash back shopping for damn near everything we have to purchase.

When you are battling debt, trying to take control of your finances, or just love to save money, cash back opportunities are those you do not want to overlook.   It is sometimes the little things adding up that make a difference.

In our debt pay off journey, our Cash Back bonuses actually help us to pay off our debt!  In fact, our cash back rewards accounted for 1.6% of our debt pay off.

What is Ebates?

Ebates is an online advertising company that pays you to shop!

Instead of a rebate – – you receive an Ebate.  This Ebate is paid to you for just clicking on the store name from their website before you shop.

You see, Ebates is an advertiser for over 1,600 businesses.

The businesses pay Ebates based on a pre-negotiated commission rate that comes from your purchase.  They advertise these businesses on their website by adding a business logo to their online directory that you click on to take you to the business website to shop.

It is the commission that they have negotiated with these businesses that they advertise for that determines the discount you will earn when you shop through the Ebates website.  They split their commission with you!

If their commission on your purchases is 5%, they will pay you 2.5%.

2.5% does not sound like that much money.  The thing we all have to remember is money is money.  When we were paying off our debt, we really lived by that principle.

Is shopping with Ebates a scam?

No.  Shopping with Ebates is not a scam.

It is real money.  Real money that is issued as a “Big Fat Check” or deposited directly into your PayPal account. To qualify, you simply sign up for Ebates and start shopping.  Your account will be eligible for payment once your Cash Back Balance is $5 or more.  Ebates pays their members four times a year.

Ebates Coupons and Cash Back

How can you save with Ebates?

There are three primary ways to save.  You have Cash Back offers, coupons and promo codes, and a refer a friend program.

Cash Back Offers

  1. Click on the “Shop Now” button: To earn the cash back, you have to start your shopping trip from the Ebates site. Then click on any of the Ebates links to the store before you make a purchase.  Before is a key part of this type of shopping.  If the link is not clicked, Ebates is unable to honor the shopping trip.
  2. Validate that you want to shop through Ebates: As a confirmation step, Ebates has you click on a validation clink so that you know your shopping trip is being acknowledged.  This validation step is through a pop-up window.  Once you agree, you are automatically directed to the store you selected, so you can begin your shopping trip.
  3. Purchase: Once you complete the checkout process, you are all done.

That’s all you have to do.

The store will then report back to Ebates and let them know that a customer made a purchase using one of their links so they can add the Cash Back to your account.  Sometimes this communication can take a little time. If you ever have questions about a transaction, just reach out to Ebates.  They are generally very responsive!

Coupons and Promo Codes

Not only do you have the opportunity to earn money, but Ebates also informs you of all the coupons that are available to save you even more money.   This site is just a good resource to find good deals.

(This one is for my mom just in case she ever shops online) Whether they are called promo codes or coupon codes, when you shop online, you want to take advantage of any discount available to you.  Promo codes are generally entered during the checkout process of online shopping. You just enter the code provided from Ebates in the designated box and you save money off your total order or shipping costs.

The Refer-A-Friend Program

All Ebate members can earn bonus money when spreading the word about the Ebates program.  A bonus is paid for all referrals that sign up for Ebates and makes a qualifying purchase, you both earn a reward! The reward amount and purchase amounts can vary.  The most current terms of the program can easily be found on the refer a friend page on their website.

Click here to sign up for eBates and receive $10 following your first qualified shopping trip!

How do you recommend friends?

When you sign up, you will receive a unique link that you can send to your friends via email, social media, or text. You will both earn the reward it if they sign up via your link and make a qualifying purchase.

Final thoughts

Rob and I used the rebates we earned from Ebates, BeFrugal, and Discover Deals to help pay off our debt.  Just remember, this is a discount program and not a money-making program.

We use the Cash Back programs like Ebates to in conjunction to our Cash Back offering from our Credit Card.  Programs like this are not for everyone.  If you can get carried away with online shopping, this program may not work for you.

We want you to save money, not help you to spend money!

Befrugal is another online shopping portal that we use to earn cash back.  Sometimes the savings are greater on Befrugal and then there are the times that you can earn a higher cash back amount than Ebates.  For us, we enjoy the perks of both.  Both online businesses work with different online businesses.

Just a bit of advice, if you want the best deal, check out both sites to see what they have to offer.  It really only takes a few moments!
